ClownCorps Tour: Bali

ClownCorps – Bali Tour
Bali, Indonesia – April 2019

In April 2019, I co-led and organized a ClownCorps tour across rural Bali, Indonesia, in partnership with the Bali Children’s Project. We offered free, interactive performances and workshops in acrobatics, clowning, and circus to children and families in underserved communities—bringing joy, connection, and creative exploration to those living far from the island’s tourist hubs. Our tour reached communities in Pemuteran, Singaraja, Karangasem, Ubud, and Munduk.

This project was designed as both a service initiative and a hands-on learning experience for a group of emerging social clowns—students who had just completed a year of training at the Clown Conservatory in San Francisco. Under our guidance, these young artists applied their skills in humanitarian clowning, gaining real-world experience in cross-cultural performance, community engagement, and trauma-informed practice.

As lead artist and facilitator, I worked closely with my co-director Joan Howard to develop a program that emphasized emotional connection, physical engagement, and ensemble play. Our workshops cultivated creativity, empathy, resilience, and trust, all through the lens of laughter and embodied presence. In each village, we created space for children to be fully themselves—joyful, imaginative, and empowered.
